To be thrown into a pit, to fall into it, to jump in without really thinking, and then to see the dirt cling to your clothes, almost as if that were a normal way to live. That, in a few words, summarizes the experience of many of us right now. Your pit might be a bereavement, a divorce, an illness, loneliness, or a job loss. But your pit is not too deep for God. Although life during times of trial can diminish our ability to hope and to conceive of a life “out of this hole,” we must keep in mind that the pit is not our place of residence. You do not have to get used to it or settle for it.
