CONSIGNMENT
To enable independent authors or those published by non-CLC Canada publishing houses to sell their books in CLC bookstores, we offer a consignment service. This service establishes a sales agreement between the author and CLC Canada.
Please note that the works will be subject to analysis by the CLC reading committee (please allow more than 45 days).
Would you like to leave your book on consignment at the bookstore? Please read the following carefully.
How it works
- All items are subject to evaluation to determine the relevance and quality of the book's content, whether they are suitable for our market and whether they are appropriate for our stores;
- CLC Canada does not accept new deposits during our busiest seizure period, from November 15 to January 15;
- A period of three months is planned between the time of receipt of your submission and the time of communication of a decision.
The period
- The deposits are taken for a period of six months, after which an evaluation is carried out to determine whether they will be continued.
The percentage
- According to industry standards, we take 40% of the book's selling price. That is, if a book is sold for $25, you will receive $15 per copy sold;
- Why 40%? Our goal remains to leave the author with maximum profits while taking an amount to cover the costs and work of tracking submissions.
At the end of the agreement
- Payment will be made at the end of the consignment or as we receive additional quantities (allow 2 to 4 weeks for processing);
- CLC Canada will only pay for items that have been sold. Damaged or stolen items are inherent risks of retail and are the sole financial responsibility of the consignor;
- It is the author's responsibility to verify sales with the store.
Renewal of the agreement
- Once the consignment period has ended, we will determine whether to keep the remaining quantities. If, during the consignment period, we run out of books or require an additional quantity, we will contact you.
- At the end of a consignment, any renewal will become a firm sale and no longer a consignment;
- If after a year you have not sold anything, it is very likely that we will ask you to come and collect your deposits.
Online sale
- Books and articles on consignment will be added to the CLC Canada website under the "Local Authors" section;
- It is the author's responsibility to advertise their work.
How to proceed?
- Submit your document in person or by mail to the Ahuntsic branch, located at the following address: 650, Boulevard Gouin Est, Montréal, QC, H2C 1A6;
- At the bottom of the page you will find a copy of the form to be completed for the attention of the reading committee. Please download it and attach it with a copy of your book when submitting your book;
- Following the evaluation by the reading committee, if your work is selected, you will be contacted to sign the consignment agreement;
- If your book is not selected, you will be contacted to collect it.
Details
- For items: they are also subject to evaluation. To do this, an appointment must be made with the store manager so that you can show them the items. If it is not possible to go to the store, a catalogue of your items, accompanied by a few small samples, must be sent to the store;
- A period of 2 weeks is given to make a decision;
- CLC Canada will pay you up to 50% of the suggested retail price. For example, if a mug is sold for $22.00, you will receive $11.00 per unit sold;
- In the event that no communication has taken place between the sender and CLC Canada for a period of more than twelve months, and we are unable to contact the sender, the product will become the property of CLC, which will dispose of it as it sees fit, and any unpaid sales will be confiscated after 18 months;
-
If the consignment is cancelled, you will be notified to collect a check along with any remaining items. If the items need to be returned, the author will handle the return process. Closed consignments not collected within three months will be disposed of appropriately.
