Dorothy Sayers was "a prophet to the nation" according to those responsible for the BBC's religious broadcasts of the 1940s. The eminent theologian Karl Barth was so impressed by Sayers' spiritual writings that he undertook to translate some of them into German. Sayers also had his admirers in France, notably the pastor Pierre Maury, but in the context of the Second World War no one wanted to translate his texts into French. It was time to do it!
In today's environment, as economic and social ties in our society break down and churches struggle to get their message heard, Sayers' ideas resonate powerfully in a world in crisis. What do we believe? Why work? What are the mistakes that have brought us to this impasse? And what can we hope for?
