An original contribution to the Reformation
The Strasbourg resident Martin Bucer, although contemporary with the first generation of Reformers of the 16th century, surprises with his moderation and his concern for the unity of the Church. His persistent efforts to find common ground are particularly noticeable between the various currents of the magisterial Reformation but also with the Anabaptists, and even with certain reformist Catholic theologians. Efforts inevitably doomed to failure in this battlefield of ideas that was the 16th century.
The theological and ecclesiological ideas of Bucer, third way between those of Martin Luther and John Calvin, faded in the face of more assertive positions. There was no time for compromise solutions. This is undoubtedly one of the reasons why we do not count him among the “greats” of the Protestant Reformation. The opportunity, through this book, to correct this injustice!
