A work on the role and functions of the pastor.
It goes without saying that pre-established formulas will not be received favorably by those who worship the Lord in a simple way and who insist on freedom in the Spirit for prayer and preaching.
While accepting this idea, however, it appears that special occasions arise when the need arises for well-conducted worship in a prearranged form. If this is the case, why settle for a rudimentary or poorly prepared liturgy? Even a recited prayer may have some value if it suggests appropriate petitions or helps express deep feelings. It was probably to meet such a need that Jesus established the prayer we call the Our Father: “This is how you must pray…”. The prophet Hosea once said to his contemporaries: “Take with you words (of repentance), And return to the Lord. Tell him. . .” (Hosea 14.3).
Don't worry that this will become a lifeless liturgy. As long as the spiritual vitality of a church continues, the use of liturgical forms will never become formal or ritual.
All ceremonies and ordinances of the Church are to be treated with order and dignity, as the apostle Paul indicates in 1 Corinthians.
This PASTOR'S MANUAL can serve as a guide in such circumstances.
