The life of William Tyndale
William Tyndale (1484-1536) is the father of the English Bible. His translation will have an influence on the English language comparable to that of Martin Luther's translation of the Bible into German.
Tyndale came from a wealthy family in the east of England. With literary training (he speaks five languages fluently) he will quickly adhere to the “new ideas” of the Reformation. The main goal of his life will be to put the biblical text within the reach of the “least plowman” by translating it into everyday English.
This desire caused him a number of difficulties with the country's authorities, which led him to go into exile on the continent.
It was from there that he smuggled successive editions of his English New Testament. But Tyndale is disturbing. King Henry VIII will do everything to silence him and will obtain from his ally Charles V his arrest, his trial and his execution.
Tyndale's last prayer was to ask God to open the king's eyes. This was done a few years later when the king imposed the presence of a Bible in English in each parish of the kingdom.
