Exegesis and biblical theology

This work is offered to Henri Blocher by his colleagues on the occasion of his forty years of teaching at the Free Faculty of Evangelical Theology, where he has taught systematic theology since the very year it opened, at the autumn 1965. This book offers the reader a first collection of articles written by H. Blocher over these forty years, at the rate of around sixty per decade. Published in various current and old journals, French and foreign, but also in sometimes ephemeral journals of evangelical works and movements, these articles deserve to be made accessible again to students of theology as well as to the Christian public.

Did Henri Blocher become a systematist out of a penchant for encyclopedism? His interest was in any case never limited by the boundaries of dogmatics, and he undertook multiple forays, brief or prolonged, into the provinces of exegesis and biblical theology. The idea thus imposed itself on the publishers of bringing together in this first volume both his main works devoted to Scripture (its status, its interpretation) and his biblical articles relating to the poetic and prophetic texts of the Old Testament. . In the introduction to these two sets are proposed three articles which perfectly express the reason for the commitment of the dogmatician of the FLTE. Following the Reformation and Awakenings, he emphasizes that theology proceeds from heart . “The theologian,” he writes, “is nothing without the communion of his brothers; he needs them, they need him.” We will therefore (re)read it with profit!
