Evil, Suffering and God
Written by a Christian to help other Christians reflect on evil and suffering, this book, far from being a theoretical discussion of philosophical problems, is intended above all as a treatise on preventive medicine.
If suffering wreaks such havoc among Christians and leaves us so distraught, it is essentially because our expectations are misguided. As long as we are not personally confronted with tragedy, we do not give this problem the reflection it deserves. If on that day our beliefs—insufficiently matured but deeply ingrained—are in serious discord with the God who revealed Himself in the Bible and supremely in Jesus Christ, we risk adding to our initial suffering by calling into question the very foundations of our faith.
This work does not claim to be an exhaustive study of the problem of suffering; it focuses on developing the themes that have helped me personally, as well as those I have had the opportunity to accompany. If it helps some Christians to establish modes and habits of thought that are solid enough so that, in times of fundamental questioning, they react with less hesitation and more faith, joy, and hope, I will have achieved my goal.
