John Wesley (1703-1791) and Methodism have strongly marked the history of Protestantism since the 18th century. However, to know the theological thought of the man who was at the origin of the Methodist Revival within the Anglican Church, we cannot turn to a particular work. Indeed, we find in his work no theological treatise comparable to the great writings of Luther or to Calvin's Institution of the Christian Religion. In fact, from the beginning of Methodism, it was undeniably the preaching of the word that played a big role – it is estimated, according to his diary, that Wesley preached nearly 50,000 times!
This work therefore aims to present the Wesleyan conception of God, of conversion, of salvation, of the Christian life - even the relationship to money and riches -, as it emerges from one hundred and fifty-one of his sermons, written and published between 1725 and 1791. In doing so – and this is one of the merits of this book – he made numerous extracts from sermons available to the French-speaking readership for the first time. Throughout the pages, the originality, the evolution and the constants of Wesley's thought are revealed, a thought to be (re)discovered.
