Words have a history and make history. A word is like a character. It has an origin, an etymology, then it knows uses, in various circumstances; we can follow its trace and restore its curriculum vitae. The dictionary records in fact the uses of a word and specifies the contexts where it has intervened, it is a memory, a nuanced picture of its capacities to signify, a reserve for future borrowings. A word enters a sentence as in a play, it is known by its previous roles, it is costumed in a singular way to play a new scene but it is the plot in which it is introduced, where relationships with other words will be formed, which will build a specific identity for it.
