Read the Bible. Are you hesitant because you don't know how to do it or have you stopped reading it because it doesn't bring you what you expected? How can you rediscover the taste for a practice that you may have abandoned because you didn't know how to benefit from it?
What is generally claimed to be reading the Bible is hardly really reading it. Verses pass before our eyes and sentences slip through our heads, but there has not really been reading .
In this little book, Charles Spurgeon gives us some very practical advice on how to read the Bible and be nourished by it.
"In a plate of nuts," he wrote, "you can recognize those that have been penetrated by a worm, by the little hole it has pierced in the shell - just a tiny hole - and then inside is the little being that eats the almond down to the last crumb. Well, as for the Bible, isn't it interesting to pierce the "shell" of the letter and live inside it, feeding on the "almond"? I would like to be a little worm of that species that, having succeeded in "piercing" its way through the shell, and having reached the deepest mysteries of the holy Gospel, lives In And of the Word of God. The Word of God will be precious to us to the extent that we feed on it.”
