The question of the origin of humanity is one of the most delicate in the dialogue between science and theology. For biology, the emergence of modern humans in the hominid lineage is nothing more than an example of the evolution of a species. But this is our species. And according to the book of Genesis, the human being, because he is created in the image of God, has a special status. However, science reveals a surprising continuity between the animal world and humanity. Where then can we locate the precise moment of the beginning of humanity? Is it possible, for example, to identify a single ancestor pair from which all humans descend? The issue is vital for Christian thought: it is the entire biblical diagnosis of the problem of humanity that is at stake, and consequently also God's plan of salvation.
This work, the fruit of the work of the Network of Evangelical Scientists (RSE), brings together several specialists, each providing insight into their field of expertise – exegesis, ancient Near Eastern literature, paleontology, genetics, systematic theology – while being attentive to the contributions of others.
