The year is 70 AD. Amidst the smoke, noise, and fury, Jerusalem falls to the Romans and the Temple is destroyed. As Jews and Christians seek to leave the city, we follow some of them through the trials of their flight from Jerusalem to Pella via Jericho, in a narrative that weaves together personal stories, the horrors of the war between Jews and Romans, and encounters with protagonists of the biblical text. A scribe travels to Galilee in search of documents about the life and teachings of Jesus, while a group of women, following a prophecy, sets out on the path toward a new life in Pella.
Ben Witherington's narrative, which he supplements with more technical and documented close-ups, brings to life the history, religious practices, and concrete aspects of daily life in Roman-era Israel, and with them, the context in which the Gospel was written.
