You have probably already visited a cathedral. During this visit you were able to admire the stained glass windows, the sculptures and more generally all the details of the building. But there is no doubt that you have also, from the outside, raised your head and taken a step back to have an overview of the construction: the towers, the flying buttresses, the majesty of the entrance portal...
You certainly did not finish your visit without finding out about the date and circumstances of the construction. The guides and signs are there for that.
We should do the same with the Bible. Yet too often we rush over the text in its detail, and, rightly, we rave about its finesse and beauty. But we neglect the overall perspective and more often ignore the circumstances, the historical context which gave birth to this magnificent text. This is a shame because we often deprive ourselves of keys to understanding which can enrich the text which is the subject of our meditation.
This work is a resumption of 20 lessons given in the more complete framework of catechism for adults at the Methodist Church of Montélimar. This synthesis aims to put in "fluent French", within the reach of all those who are ready to invest a minimum of time, the wealth of biblical scholarship, too often reserved for a small core of specialists.
