The believers of Rome, writes the apostle Paul, “wholeheartedly obeyed the fundamental teaching” to which they were “subjected” (Rom 6.17), a sort of doctrinal and ethical catechism, which summarized the fundamental points of the faith and Christian life. The Our Father, which Jesus taught his disciples, plays an identical role in prayer and spiritual life: “Pray therefore thus,” says the Lord. He should be the “boss” that all our prayers follow. Certainly, everyone weaves their prayer in their own way and there is nothing more intimate and more personal than spiritual life. But in the Our Father, Jesus gives us the framework and, even more, the “canon” of authentic Christian prayer and thus opens the path to a healthy spirituality. Let us therefore learn to pray: “ Our Father, who art in heaven… ”
