The Darby translation was first published in 1885. It still retains today all the qualities for which it has been valued for 140 years. It is the most literal French translation available, rendering the original text of the Holy Scriptures as closely as possible.
This new edition retains the 1885 translation in a more readable presentation of the text and notes. The text and punctuation remain unchanged, with the exception of a very limited number of corrections:
- The modification of about thirty unused words. (e.g., derechef --> again, once more; incontinent --> immediately)
- For verbs, the replacement involves some tenses that are no longer used in modern French. (for example: vous n'écoutâtes point --> vous n'avez point écouter; si tu eusses été ici --> si tu avais été ici)
- The notes have been reformatted to facilitate access to their content.
- The notes indicating the variants of the Received Text have been removed. JN Darby had already made the decision to exclude these manuscript variants.
- In some biblical passages, the verse numbering system has been adapted to match the numbering used today by almost all versions of the Bible.
- Some typos present in previous editions have also been corrected.
