We know that the Bible speaks of marriage, but we can forget that it also speaks of celibacy. It does not present celibacy as a "default" situation, but as a call launched by God to certain Christians.
Through the biblical text, from the Old to the New Testament, Barry Danylak shows where the biblical conception of celibacy comes from: from the creational order of the Old Testament to the kingdom of the New Testament, from the family blessings of the old covenant to the spiritual birth of the new covenant.
The author does not overlook the difficulties of the subject, especially the Old Testament emphasis on family and children, and on the role of descendants in the continuity of the covenant people. But, as he shows, in the New Testament the blessings of the new covenant are offered in Christ to all believers, and are therefore available to married and single people alike, whether they are single voluntarily or not.
There are many single people in the Churches. It was therefore high time to provide the Christian communities as a whole with the necessary biblical, theological and practical data. In this way, everyone will be able to become aware of the way in which marriage and singleness bear witness to the Gospel in a complementary way in today's world.
