Two scandals have recently erupted in the Catholic Church. The first, within the hierarchy, had a considerable impact in public opinion, it was the Barbarin-Preynat affair; the second aroused much less response: in the wake of “the Manif pour tous”, Catholics now vote for the extreme right more than the average French person. In both cases, these are indeed scandals, in the biblical sense of the term, that is to say real forms of counter-witnesses in relation to the values professed by the Gospel which are concern for the little ones and welcoming foreigners.

This investigative book is based on well-documented inventory work, which reveals other "scandals" (return of magical thinking, rise of superstitions and medieval rites, veneration of false relics, sexist and homophobic practices, absence of democratic debate, whitewashing, etc.) and puts them in theological perspective; while the clash of civilizations is fueled from various sides, “Scandals” raises the alarm about the risks of sectarian excesses which it describes and analyzes.

Christian Delahaye is both a journalist ( Quotidien du Médecin ) and a theologian (holder of a research master's degree in theology of religions), he teaches at the Theologicum – Faculty of Theology of the Catholic Institute of Paris, as well as at the Center d theological studies of Normandy.
