Biblical, scientific and practical perspectives

What is time?

According to the biblical sage, “to everything there is a time.” However, in the 21st century, time has become a scarce commodity and no one seems to have enough of it. But what is time? Is it just an illusion or a human construct? A deeply metaphysical question, it questions scientists just as much. Physicists have developed atomic clocks that drift by less than a second in 100 million years. The biosphere is punctuated by the cycle of day and night. Man is no exception: nighttime sleep is not “wasted time”, but an essential element for the proper functioning of the body, and the brain, in particular.

The Bible recognizes the importance of time. Scripture highlights our limitation, within this time, in contrast to the eternal God. But what exactly is the relationship between divine eternity and human time? Can progress in physics and biological discoveries help us better understand this mystery of infinity, of divine eternity? What light does the Bible shed on this question which has accompanied humanity since the dawn of time?

Fruit of the interdisciplinary work of the Network of Evangelical Scientists (RSE), this book invites us to contemplate the time of man, the time of the universe and the time of God, in order to “count our days well” and live them with wisdom. The contributors are specialists in biblical exegesis, theology, cosmology, biology and psychology. They present the concept of time to us from different angles and offer us practical applications to properly manage the time allotted to us.

Participated in this work: Andrew Beale, Henri Blocher, Chloé Duboc, Lydia Jaeger, Thierry Huser, Jérémie Vaubaillon, Rachel Vaughan.
