A scream was heard followed by an explosion. “This is the signal! yelled a passenger from the front of the ship. Everyone get off!”

Ilse panicked. The people around her were running in all directions, knowing that they would only have a short time to reach the beach without the knowledge of the British patrols. She hoped that the weakest would have time to reach the coast before it was too late. She looked at the children, frail and frightened in the darkness of the night which was drawing to a close. She took two of them by the hand and followed the crowd toward the bow. Passengers jumped from the boat, clinging to debris to reach the beach. There was great excitement, but everything had to be done very quickly. Reluctantly, the young woman threw her guitar case into the sea and jumped into the icy water. A good number of travelers had already reached the coast. She realized with horror that she had no footing. Grabbing her instrument, she tried to let herself be carried by the waves to dry land. We came to help the children. Passengers carried them on their shoulders or carried them in their arms. Ilse was struggling to reach the coast. His clothes weighed him down. It seemed to him that the sea was carrying him out to sea. She no longer paid attention to her surroundings. Finally, his feet hit the bottom. Exhausted, she crawled towards the beach on the wet sand. She hadn't gone fast enough. The others were already heading inside. She was in no hurry, too happy to have reached the shore, sheltered from the waves. She would have liked to kiss the blessed ground that welcomed her, then rest on it, but her happiness at having reached the earth was short-lived. She heard screams coming from offshore. Turning around quickly, she saw with horror a child struggling in the sea, in danger of drowning and seeing the abandoned ship collapse on him.

Ilse hesitated for a second, then ran and threw herself back into the sea. She did not pay attention to the cry of a man next to her asking her to give up. She couldn't let this child die again, she couldn't.
