John Nelson Darby personally translated the Bible into German, French and English. Marion Field, one of Darby's biographers, mentions that his epitaph reads: "John Nelson Darby, both unknown and well known." This applies admirably to his translation work. To some people today, Darby is just the founder of a movement known as the Plymouth Brothers, a person whose name conjures up nothing but severity, division, separation and dissent. Unfortunately, the idea we have of him does not do justice to the man he was; his enormous contribution to the fields of translation and biblical study is forgotten. This work therefore seeks to establish the historical facts surrounding his translation work, as well as the aims and principles which underlie it.
