“Traditional Quebec society has long been presented as a homogeneous community, strongly attached to its land, its French language and its Roman Catholic religion. In a context where language, culture, space and identity intertwined, French-speaking Protestants formed a doubly minority social group: Protestants in a society dominated by Catholic power, French-speaking among their English co-religionists. We therefore understand the silence of history towards them.

Despite their important role in the colony's early activities and subsequent social and economic development, even traces of their historical presence are difficult to identify today. No inventory recognizes the heritage of the French-speaking Protestants of Quebec, the sources are incomplete and the Protestant cult, resulting from the Reformation and centered on the Word, is characterized by its simplicity and leaves little room for architecture and art. religious. It is to the discovery of these traces, material and immaterial, that this book is devoted.

In the current state of research, it is impossible to construct a continuous account of their historical presence. The aim of the book is therefore to shed light on certain aspects but above all, to examine the memory traces of these presences. Supported by exceptionally rich iconographic documentation, the fruit of collaborations with several Quebec and French museum institutions, the ensemble brings together recent or ongoing research work in diverse fields in order to offer a reflection on memory and forgetting, on the history and the silences of history. »
