If we are honest, we must admit that there are many things we do not understand about God: why do some of His children suffer terribly, while others seem to enjoy a more peaceful life? Why does he order things like the massacre of the Canaanites in the Bible? How can the violent death of Jesus by crucifixion two thousand years ago meet our expectations and our needs?
Faced with the great problems of life, we do not have the answer that will silence all questions, and those who think they have it are probably deluding themselves. “Even if the wise man claims to know,” says the Ecclesiate, “in reality he cannot understand” (8.17). In the Christian faith, there are areas of mystery that escape the most in-depth theological research and even the deepest spiritual experiences. For many people, these issues raise so many questions and doubts that faith itself becomes a struggle, and the person and character of God are called into question.
Chris Wright encourages us to face the limits of our understanding and recognize the pain and sadness they cause us. But, with Psalm 73, the author wants us to be able to say: “Yes, all this is very difficult to understand. But no situation escapes the Lord and I want to trust him: he will restore justice. In the meantime, I stay close to him, because he is my safe refuge, and I tell of his works. »
