Criticized by some, contested by others, often questioned, sometimes ridiculed, Christianity is not dead, as some had announced. But he will never be the same again. It is called to change profoundly. In a courageous reflection of rare lucidity, Paul-Émile Roy invites us to take a look at the situation of Christianity, in Quebec and, more broadly, in the West.

“It is my conviction,” he wrote, “that the Christian faith cannot die. It remains alive in the very ashes of Christianity and will inspire a new culture. However, there is no question of patching up old structures, of sewing new pieces into old clothes, of putting new wine into old wineskins. In the order of faith, history does not obey the rules of continuous progress, but those of death and resurrection.

A native of Saint-Cyprien, Paul-Émile Roy studied at Saint-Laurent College and the University of Montreal, where he obtained his doctorate in literature after spending time at the University of Paris. A professor at Cégep de Saint-Laurent, he collaborated on several literary journals before retiring from teaching in 1991. Author of several works, he was interested in education, politics and spirituality.
