Description
John Chrysostom (343-407) was a key figure in Christianity in the Eastern Roman Empire, famous for his oratory skills which earned him the nickname "Golden Mouth". Born in Antioch to a Christian family, he received a classical education and turned to the faith, being baptized in 368. After six years of monastic life in the Syrian desert, which affected his health, he returned to Antioch and was ordained a priest.
His moderation during the riots in Antioch attracted the attention of the Emperor Honorius, who appointed him Archbishop of Constantinople in 398. John was a man of modesty and service, committed to the purity of the Gospel. Although beloved by the people, he opposed the rich and powerful, which earned him many enemies. His reformist zeal and outspokenness eventually led to his exile and death. His legacy includes more than 4,000 sermons, testifying to his spiritual and ethical commitment.
