The life of Jacob offers many parallels with our lives: his faults and errors speak to us, because we often find them in ourselves. Like him, we aspire to a life more in conformity with God. We must fight like him to ensure our existence, we resort to schemes and compromises in the face of discourteous partners. If God has not lost patience with a Jacob, he will also lead us to the goal he has planned for us.
Jacob's life before Peniel (Gen 21:23-34) is the true picture of a man's life before God could accept and use him, just as his experience at Peniel is exactly the type of experience by which God must lead us if we want to be pleasing to him and useful in his service.
