When all is dark, where can hope come from? The story of Ruth is set in the time when the Israelites are living in the Promised Land. But instead of obeying God, they rebel against His authority. When they cry out for help, God sends them a judge. But when that judge disappears, the people go even further astray than their ancestors. It is a time of brutality and immorality.
During these 30 days with the book of Ruth, we will turn our gaze to an ordinary woman, Naomi, and her family. We will witness her joys and sorrows, but also, and this is even more important, the unexpected intervention of God in her situation.
The story of Ruth, against a backdrop of social, religious and moral chaos, is like a spark of hope: faith remains active and God continues to act. This spark announces King David and, ultimately, Jesus, the hope of the nations, the light of the world and the prince of peace.
