In ancient times, suffering and illness were generally considered a sign of divine wrath. We still believe it today. In this second epistle to the Corinthians, Paul's suffering is evident. One could interpret his suffering and difficulties as a punishment inflicted by God. But, the apostle tells us, it doesn't work that way. If we encounter trials, it is not because God is angry. His goal is to increase our confidence in him. This was an innovative design for the time. Paul would like the Corinthians to understand all the comfort that we find in Jesus, in his suffering, his death, his resurrection and the new life that he offers us.
